Enameled Cast Iron Cookware

Cast iron cookware was used very popularly up to one generation ago for cooking purposes. Older people today still prefer cast iron pots and pans, which they say provide a better flavor to the food that is cooked in it. They also claim that the little amount of iron that passes on from the cookware to the foods while cooking is, in fact, needed by the human body in order to protect them from problems such as anemia. Today's generation is the steel and aluminum age. They are as far from cast iron as possible. That is a part of the various ways in which general human lifestyle has changed in modern times.

Enameled Cast Iron Cookware

Using pure iron cookware these days is not ideal. Cast iron is not a very suitable material actually. It does not have the smoothness of steel and it is not as durable. It cannot be fired to very high temperatures because it has a lower melting point than steel. Also - a very important point - cast iron cookware does not look as good.

Enameled Cast Iron Cookware

That is the reason options such as enameled cast iron cookware have become popular nowadays. Enamel cast iron cookware is basically made of iron but it has been enameled. The process of enameling is fascinating in itself. In this procedure, glass is powdered and fired directly on the cast iron surface. Because of this, glass melts and forms a layer on the iron surface. This not only adds immensely to the beauty of the cookware, but it also adds greatly to its physical properties.

The beauty is an important point. Enameled surfaces can look much shinier than ordinary surfaces. They can be made opaque, semitransparent or fully transparent, depending on the quantity of glass that was used and the nature of the process of enameling. Also, by adding various elements to the glass, different colors can be obtained. A very interesting example is neodymium, which can be added in varying amounts to impart different shades of the color red to the enamel cast iron cookware. The colors that are imparted to these cookware items are intrinsic, which means that they will last as long as the utensil lasts, without losing even a grain of their luster.

However, the main reason to provide the enamel glaze to the iron cookware items is to enhance its physical properties. The enamel can increase the smoothness of the surface, which makes them look good as well as become more suitable for the cooking process. The cookware also becomes harder, which means it does not scratch easily. Since glass is almost chemically inert, by enameling the cast iron surface of the cookware, the cookware is made chemically inert too. Because of that reason, it is possible to cook almost anything in this type of cookware. It will also withstand high temperatures and will never burn or carry burn stains like most other metals do.

The looks and the physical properties are reason enough why most people go for iron cookware in today's times. Traditionally, items such as Dutch style pots and pans were enameled, but now because of aesthetics and added properties, a lot many other utensils are being enameled too. Consequently, there is a much better enamel cast iron cookware variety to choose from.
