Care for Sinks - Sink Care Guide

Most of us are aware about the different types of sinks and their usefulness. But many of us are unaware about the methods of cleaning for sinks. As sinks are made of different materials their cleaning process also differs from sink to sink. The present day sinks are actually very easy to clean, most of them are made of materials which can resist the wear and tear of daily use. Sink is used for various purposes in different areas, depending on the use also the cleaning methods changes. If the sink is always in contact with substances which causes staining then it should be virtually cleaned after every use to prevent staining. The following guide will help you for cleaning sinks made of different materials.

Enameled Cast Iron Cookware

Stone sinks add class to any kitchen or bathroom. Stone sinks are porous and will get stains easier than any other sink material. Stone absorb fluids and allows it to remain below its surface. It is necessary to wipe any fluid that remains on the stone sinks as early as possible longer exposure to staining fluids causes deeper penetration of the stain and the staining will become permanent and difficult to remove. Granite and marble are the most commonly used stone sinks. They need different cleaning processes, as the porosity is different.

Enameled Cast Iron Cookware

Granite is less porous than marble and do not absorb liquids so easily. Scrubbing the granite sink with a soft brush using soap solution is more than enough for regular cleaning. For persistent stains in granite sinks using dish washer liquid or diluted bleach solution is recommended. Strong alkalis such as ammonia should not be used to clear the blocks in granite sinks. Rust stains caused by iron particles can be successfully removed using a cleaner which contain mild acid like oxalic acid.

Marble sinks cleaning is little more difficult as it is more porous and absorbency is more .To prevent marble sinks from absorbing fluids sealing is required. For regular cleaning use soft cleaning liquid that contains mild bleach or detergent. Acidic solutions can cause etching of the marble sinks. So care should be taken to prevent marble sinks coming in contact with orange juice, soft drinks and other acidic materials. Never use acidic cleaners on your marble sink acid will eat up the marble. Marble sinks should be rinsed and dried after each use to prevent water spots. If, your marble sink has the problem of etching and water spots it is better to get it re -polished and re-finished by an expert professional.

Copper sinks are much easy to clean. Regular cleaning with mild soap and rinsing with water is all you have to do to keep your copper sink clean. The copper sinks are maintenance free. Copper cleaners can be used on copper sinks if you want to always have the shiny appearance. Copper will gain patina as it ages. If you prefer to slow down the ageing process you have to apply layer of wax on copper sinks at particular intervals. This will cause easy run off for water and prevent any harm effect of hard water on copper. Always keep your copper sink and drain dry by wiping with a cloth to prevent spotting of the sink. Stainless steel sinks requires least effort to clean. Rinsing it with soap solution and drying it with soft cloth will keep the stain less sinks clean. Glass sinks are very sturdy and are simple to clean. When cleaned properly glass sinks will remain as new for years. No special cleaning is required for them. Vinegar and water solution can be used to remove any water spots on the glass sinks, but are not to be used on every sink cleaning task.

Cast a Cooking Spell With Cast Iron! Featuring Fried Chicken!

What can I say about cooking with Cast Iron? It continues to be popular even with all the new cookware products. Cooks return time and again to cast iron due to its amazing properties and versatility. I have a lot of love and respect for cooking with these wondrous skillets, dutch ovens and sauce pans. Remembering Grandma's fried chicken and trying to duplicate it cannot be accomplished without a cast iron frying pan! When using the traditional black cast iron it must be correctly seasoned, washed with warm water and a mild detergent, and then dried on the stove top over low heat. It will require very little oil to cook with and will be fairly non-stick if used correctly. The enameled cast iron pots have the same old fashioned tried and true qualities. Plus, they are dishwasher safe and very colorful.

Enameled Cast Iron Cookware

One of the most important things to remember when frying a steak, pork chops, or hamburgers in the cast iron skillet is to preheat the pan. The same goes for fried chicken or chicken fried steak! Coat the pan with a small amount of oil and then place on a med/high heat to preheat. This accomplishes two things. It sears the meat so less grease is absorbed and it seals in the natural juices! Cast iron retains heat so well while cooking the heat should be turned down once the food is browned on all sides. Generally I prepare food on low to medium while using these pans.

Here's my Grandma's Fried Chicken Recipe:

1. Begin by placing half an inch of cooking oil in the skillet and ideally add a stick of butter or margarine.

2. Place lightly salted flour (about 2 cups for a whole chicken cut up) on a piece of plastic wrap or on a plate.

3. Dredge the chicken pieces in the flour, coating all sides. Skin on or off is a matter of preference and calories.

4. Preheat the oil, and then add the chicken pieces. Do not crowd the pieces or your chicken will turn out with a mushy crust instead of a crisp one. Allow it to lightly brown on one side and then turn and lightly brown on the other.

5. Fried chicken is one dish that will take fairly constant attention, and some time. Remember to cook it thoroughly. Just because it's brown on the outside does not mean it's cooked on the inside.

6. Depending on the size of the pieces, generally 35 to 45 minutes of cooking is required. Turn the heat down to allow the chicken to cook thoroughly without burning.

And Now Chicken Gravy!

1. Once the chicken is done, drain most of the grease from the pan, retaining the cracklings and a couple of tablespoons of grease.

2. To this add the remaining flour and lightly brown for a few minutes, do not burn!

3. Slowly add about 2 cups of milk while stirring to thicken and dissolve lumps, continue adding a little extra milk until it is the correct consistency.

4. Serve with mashed potatoes and Grandma's fried chicken.

If you're new to cooking with cast iron you'll soon grow to love it. It is the main type of cookware I use on top of the stove! While you will most likely order more pieces in more sizes, you will probably never have to replace the original skillet! It is a lifetime investment that will serve you well!

How to Deep Clean a Bathroom

Lime scale can build up over time, particularly in hard water areas, and can make bathrooms look dirty and run-down. Using a general bathroom cleaning solution is not usually enough to shift these deposits; instead an acid de-scaling solution is called for. Professional products are the best at doing this quickly and effectively but more and more products are coming into the domestic market that really are quite good. All ceramic sanitary fittings, tiled surfaces and glass should be de-scaled; baths, shower screens, basins, and toilets, paying particular attention to areas where lime scale builds up, such as where water drips from a tap to the plughole and shower heads. The acid solution will also cut through greasy body fat deposits and soap-scum and will save you the cost of any other products. When de-scaling the toilet bowl it is a good idea to empty the water first and this can be done in most toilet units by using the toilet brush in a pushing motion toward the u-bend. Be particularly careful when using acid de-scaling products with metallic elements such as taps as modern chrome fittings as quite often only chrome plated and acid can strip plating and can corrode other metal surfaces. You should also avoid these products with cast-iron units as they can dull enamel.

Discoloured Grout between tiles can spoil the appearance of a clean bathroom and once it becomes discoloured it is very difficult to remove by general cleaning. There are some innovative products on the market such as touch-up paint pens that can transform the look of discoloured grout. However for general cleaning you can use household bleach to whiten yellowed grout by applying to a soft cloth, dabbing onto the grout, scrub with an old toothbrush and then rinse off completely. The same goes for acid cleaners; bleach and acid solutions are caustic and can degrade the grout and other surfaces, so make sure that you rinse thoroughly after treatment. It should go without saying that you should always wear protective gloves and in particular if you are cleaning high level areas, you should wear goggles. Never mix bleach as the result can be highly toxic fumes.

Enameled Cast Iron Cookware

Mildew is another common problem in bathrooms. There are specialist products available that are inexpensive and quite effective, however a spray solution of bleach will work just as well. Dilute the bleach 3:1 (hot water to bleach) in a clean trigger-spray bottle and spray onto affected surfaces including tiles, painted walls and ceilings. It is essential to remove all items from the areas, in particular bath mats and towels and to completely cover carpeted floors with polythene sheeting, and protect yourself with overalls, gloves and goggles. Leave for a few minutes and wipe with a cloth, some areas may need a little agitation. Mould and Mildew in silicone sealant around bathroom fittings and windows can be a problem as it is often forms between the sealant and the surface and can only be removed with the sealant itself. The bleach solution can also be used to freshen up discoloured plastic shower curtains; just lay them in the bath, spray the solution on, leave for a few minutes and rinse off.

Be wary of using any abrasive scouring pads in your bathroom as these will scratch most modern metallic fittings and can damage glass, acrylic and plastic. If you have any slate, marble, granite or limestone counters, walls or flooring never use any acid de-scaling products or bleach, and consult specialist advice.

Are you looking for the lowest price Le Creuset pots and pans? Of course it is important to find a good price on any product you purchase. And the chance for savings on items that are higher price can be even better, so you need to do your research.

If you are looking for good prices on Le Creuset you most certainly know that they are not cheap in quality or price. What I think is so great about Le Creuset is that most likely they will last a lifetime. My grandmother has a dutch oven that she gave to my mom 20 years ago and my mom still has it and uses it. So while one of these can cost a lot of money, you will never have to buy another.

There are a few websites out there that have excellent prices and a great selection. That is where I would to my shopping.

But what if you actually want to see the pot you want to purchase? I would spend a day going to William Sonoma or the mall to look and touch what you want to purchase. That is the way I shop. Go to the store and check it out and then find the best price from a trustworthy company on the internet and make my purchase. While I make a lot of purchases on the internet I still have a hard time buying something without actually seeing it and touching it before actually making my purchase.

With a Le Creuset pan I think it is very important to see and feel the quality of what you are getting. First, you need to understand that these are fairly heavy because they are made from cast iron. But once you feel the heft, you will know you are buying something of quality, which I think, will make it easier to spend the money.

So no matter where you end buying your Le Creuset pot or pan, make sure you take the time to find a good price because those deals are out there.

Are All Stainless-Steel Range Kitchen Utensils Healthy?

The obvious answer to that question is "YES" it is, but then how sure are you about this? Do you know that stainless steel contains Nickel, which is extremely poisonous in nature! Well, to be honest, the purpose of my rambling here is not to scare you but to make you more aware of something that is so much a part of our life.

Coming to the point, the every Stainless steel range of kitchen utensils are actually very safe to use and are really harmless, however, we should keep few things in mind while using Stainless steel Utensils. But before we actually jump into that, let us take a brief look on why one prefers to use stainless steel range of kitchen utensils over others:

Enameled Cast Iron Cookware

1. Stainless steel is absolutely inert in nature and remains truly unaltered by the alkalinity or acidity of the food that is being cooked. Thus, steel does not contribute to or affect the taste of food in any way.

2. The metal is truly corrosion resistant and is the hard surface is scratch resistance. This scratch resistance imparts steel a property called "Hygiene" due to which it also finds application for medical purposes.

3. A very low maintenance required and a long life span

However, Steel is not the best known conductors of heat and it tends to develop hot spots. Due to which, a steel pot with heavier base made of copper or aluminum makes a right combo. These metals are help diffuse heat and thus ensure better cooking.

The health issues come from the constituents of stainless steel. Let us have a look at them one at a time:

1. Chromium: Pure Iron in itself is not stable. Chromium forms a tough passive coat of chromium oxide. Every time we cook food in Stainless steel utensil, there is a certain amount of chromium i.e. approximately 40 to 50 micrograms passes into the food. However, the safe intake range is close to 200 micrograms and thus it is truly harmless.

2. Iron: Well, Iron is required for our blood cells, but definitely too much of it can turn out to be poisonous. However, the iron contributed by stainless steel range kitchen utensil is nearly one fifth of an ideal intake amount.

3. Nickel: A highly poisonous metal. But once again, a too less amount of it is passed through food. But a word of caution for all those who are allergic to Nickel. I would suggest that they had better avoid stainless steel range of kitchen utensils.

4. Aluminum: In case the utensil uses Aluminum base as a means for conducting heat better, then care must be taken that Aluminum does not directly come in contact of food, i.e. it should entirely be stainless steel surface inside. Though Aluminum is not all that harmful, but a daily accumulation of it can create health issues. So better be aware.

5. Handling of Utensils also has a role to play. In case you end up developing several scratches in your steel utensils, then you are just providing a perfect breeding ground for germs. These germs cannot be removed by cleaning with brushes and towels. So you should be slightly careful with the quality of scrub while washing steel utensils.

Casseroles have been around much longer than people think. The popular meal style can trace its roots back to ancient China and its mud-encrusted Beggar's Chicken. Casseroles today are common for chefs looking to save time by cooking all the ingredients at once and significantly reducing the amount of dishes that will need to be cleaned later. To make the most of your adventures into cooking casseroles, keep in mind a few essential tips.

Many of the casserole recipes you will come across will ask for some sort of canned soup. These prepared sauces are not always very nutritious. If you are concerned about caloric or fat intake, you can substitute with a low-fat version on the canned soup; if there is not one available, you can make a white sauce to use instead.

If you plan to freeze your casserole, line the pan with tin foil, leaving an extra amount on the side to cover the dish later. You have two options with freezing a casserole: you can put it straight in the freezer uncooked or you can bake it first. If you decide to cook it, be sure to let it cool completely before putting it in the freezer. When you are ready to eat it, thaw it in the fridge overnight or simply bake it in a 350 degree oven for twice as long as you normally would. The dish is done when a skewer poked into the middle feels hot to the touch. A frozen casserole will stay good about two months.

If the recipe you are using calls for herbs, the decision on whether to use fresh or dried really depends on the length of time the casserole needs to be cooked. If it is more than an hour, you should used dried herbs; fresh herbs lose flavor with long exposure to heat. If you want to get the top nicely browned, do not cover it during baking.

You may run into recipes that require a certain pan that you do not have. This is an easy problem to fix. If you have a dish near the same size, use that. If not, keep this rule in mind: when substituting a shallower pan, take 25 percent off the cooking time; when substituting a deeper pan, add 25 percent.

How to Choose a Roasting Pan

A good roaster is a necessity for making a holiday turkey, but a roaster can also be used year-round for making things like prime rib or leg of lamb, turkey breast or whole fish.

When looking at roasters, consider the following. You want a roaster that's heavy, but not so heavy that you will have a hard time lifting it once you've added whatever you'll be roasting to it. You want to be able to use your roaster on the stove top when searing meats and making gravies as well as using it under the broiler and at very high heat in the oven. And, you want your roaster to be made of a material that conducts heat well because a poorly conducting pan is prone to hot spots and warping or buckling, especially on the stovetop.

Given these requirements, roasters made of glass, stoneware or ceramic aren't good choices because they don't always function well on the stove top and also because these materials tend to become very heavy to carry when fully loaded. Enameled cast iron can also be unwieldy. Avoid roasting pans with a nonstick finish because these types of pans can't be used at extreme heat. Aluminum is a good conductor of heat, but all-aluminum pans can react to the acid in lemons or tomatoes and give your food an odd taste.

Stainless steel is durable, nonreactive and not overly weighty, but is also a poor conductor of heat. For this reason, my choice for roasters is heavy-duty stainless steel sandwiched around one or more layers of a conductive metal, usually aluminum. This combination gives you the best characteristics of stainless while providing fast and even heat conduction.

When looking for a roaster, consider the shape and size of the pan. Make sure to measure both the interior of your oven and the pan you're considering, including the handles, and allow 2 inches on all sides for air circulation. And, consider that you don't necessarily want the biggest roasting pan you can fit in your oven. Size here is a bit of a balancing act. You want a pan that will accommodate the largest cut of meat that you can foresee yourself roasting, but if your pan is too big, roasting smaller cuts of meat can be difficult because the juices can burn on the too-large surface area surrounding the roast.

Look for a roasting pan with sides high enough to hold the pan juices and prevent these hot liquids from splashing out when the pan is moved or transported. The pan's sides shouldn't be so high as to prevent the dry, hot air of the oven from reaching the lower portions of your meat. Pans with sides that are between 2 ½ and 3 inches usually work well.

And, when considering the pan's shape, look for a rectangular pan with rounded corners. When making gravy, it's much easier to get a whisk into the corners to dig out the browned bits of food that tend to accumulate there if the corners are rounded.

One last thing to think about is the pan's handles. The handles should be made of metal so that oven temperature isn't an issue and they should be sturdy and preferably riveted. They should be large enough to be easy to grip, and should stand straight up. Folded Handles are hard to unfold when you are using pot holders, and handles that stick out to the sides waste precious oven room.
